Latest in Beauty: 3 item subscription box

I was recently tempted to subscribe to the Latest in Beauty subscription box because I could choose the products I’d receive, having become increasingly annoyed with receiving small samples from subscription boxes of things I am not interested in.

There are 3 subscription types on offer- 3 items for £9, 6 items for £15 and 9 items for £18. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money so opted for the cheapest box. The ordering experience was very easy, plenty of products on offer and you can cancel your subscription any time. This is my first month so I am not sure how good the selection is month to month but I definitely didn’t struggle to find 3 products I liked this time.

I was really impressed when I received my box! It was beautifully packaged in pink tissue paper, the box it arrived in isn’t a pretty one you can keep but that’s fine because I am swimming in Birchboxes anyway! They’d also included a free bag of Pop Chips and a teabag which I think is quite lovely for a £9 subscription. I also received a free 15ml sample of Origins Planscription anti-ageing power serum which I am very excited to try as it’s quite a pricy complex and I am just getting into incorporating serums into my daily skincare routine.

The three products I ordered were:

  1. Urban Beauty United Powder brush- unfortunately I really don’t like this brush. The bristles are really hard and makes my skin feel horrible after using it. It’s also much smaller than I expected.
  2. Laidbare Pack Your Bags Lighten and Tighten eye cream- this is a full size, 30ml product. I’m excited to start using it when I finish my current eye cream.
  3. Burt’s Bees Natural Lipstick in Sunset Cruise- this is a lovely summery shade and the formula is really moisturising and feels lovely on the lips. I have wanted to try these lipsticks for a while so couldn’t wait to grab it when I saw it in the lineup.

Overall I think this subscription is great! My box way exceeded in value than the £9 I paid for it and I was chuffed with the thoughtful extras they had included. You also get a free make up bag with your first subscription which is really handy and will definitely come in useful.

Have you tried Latest in Beauty? What did you think?

Until next time,

Brand review: Nyx

Hi everyone!

I have somehow managed to find myself in possession of a few Nyx products and thought it’d be fun to do a review of this brand.

I bought the Nyx Professional Makeup Jet Set Travel Kit- Matte vs Glow from Look Fantastic which contained a few of these products. Having £3.95 from the Pick n Mix makes it reeeeeally tempting to try and grab some bargains off the website!

Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator

I am not much of a liquid highlighter kind of girl because I mainly use powdered products on my face, but I was pleasantly surprised with how easy this product was to use! It blends nicely, even over powder and gives a nice healthy looking glow to the top of my cheeks. It isn’t too glittery, which I like

Pore Filler primer

It’s hard for me to comment on how good this primer is because I don’t wear liquid foundation. I found the texture to be quite weird and almost greasy but once on the face it didn’t make me look shiny. I don’t really think it did much to my pores and it isn’t something I reach to use to be honest.

Away We Glow Illuminating powder

Now this is way more up my street! I actually really like this powder. I use it over bronzer to give my face a nice shimmer and use the lightest shade for a more concentrated highlight to the top of my cheeks, nose and cupid’s bow. I think it’ll be especially nice to use in the summer as I think it looks much nicer when the glitter particles reflect in the sunshine.

This is Everything Lip Loving Balm

I don’t normally buy lip balms in pots as I find stick ones easier to use and more hygenic but I have to say I was really really impressed with this! I tend to put it on while I do the rest of my make up and it absorbs into the lips really nicely and I feel like it moisturises them very well.

Lip Lingerie liquid lipstick in the shade “Ruffle Trim”

Unfortunately I was disappointed by this product. I have heard a lot of people rave about the Nyx liquid lipsticks but I found this to be overly drying and cakey looking. Maybe if I use a lip scrub before applying it then the results might be better, which would be good because I really like the colour. It isn’t overly long lasting and doesn’t survive very well through meals, but then again most lipsticks don’t.

Matt Finish setting spray

Lastly in the set was this setting spray. I don’t tend to use setting sprays so unfortunately I don’t know how it compares to others but it doesn’t mess up my make up when I spray it on, however I also don’t really know if it makes it stay any longer. I do think it helps my face to look less powdery however and I am tempted to try a more dewy setting spray to see what that’s like.

Overall this set was an absolute steal, RRP was £25, down to £18.75 at the moment. It gave me a great chance to try some of the products from this brand. I think this is a great way to discover new products and try the mini versions first before buying a full size of something you may be disappointed in.

9e428307-3ddb-4ab8-a584-64e81770fa30 (1)

Recently I placed another order on feel unique (yes you guessed it, with another £3.95 off). I wanted to try a few more products from Nyx, this is what I picked up.

Eye and eyebrow pencil in brown

I needed a new brown eyeliner and this one does the job. It lasts all day and doesn’t smudge or transfer.

Lipstick in the shade “Paparazzi”

I love the shade of this lipstick, it’s a lovely summery pinky shade. Unfortunately it’s a creamy lipstick so it is not very long lasting on the lips. Would be okay for a day when I am not planning on eating or drinking anything…. which will probably be never.

Lid Lingerie Shadow Palette

I was after a simple, nude eyeshadow palette which is compact and easy to take on holiday. The shades in this palette are really pretty and most of them are quite pigmented, with the exception of the lightest shade which I use to prime the lids but can see no colour pay off from it whatsoever. I think I’ll be able to create many great looks with this. I wore these today with an eyeshadow primer and the colour didn’t budge all day!

Overall I quite like Nyx products. Their products are quite affordable and I enjoy their simple and sleek no frills packaging.

Have you tried any of these products?

Until next time,

Spring make up look

Hello Spring!

If you live in the UK you would have struggled to miss the sun showing its face for the past few days and it finally truly feels like spring and summer is on its way!

Today we went out to enjoy the sunshine and I wanted to share with you the products I wore on my face. As you may have already guessed I am fairly low maintenance with make-up (although my boyfriend who was waiting for me to get ready would probably like to disagree) so I try to make things as simple as possible.

For my base I use the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Unifant tinted moisturiser. I’m planning on doing a separate review of this product. After my moisturiser I used the Maybelline Fit Me matte+ poreless translucent powder, applying it all over my face with a large powder brush, concentrating on the T-zone in an attempt to keep my face oil-free.

I then used the Maybelline Fit me concealer to brighten my undereyes and make me look more awake. I am a total convert to this concealer and I’ll definitely repurchase it when this one runs out. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you how great it is, as I am a bit late to the party with this one and everyone else has already raved about it at length.

To add some warmth and definition to my face I used the No7 bronzer in the shade Caramel. I really have to make sure I apply this sparingly as it’s still a tad too dark for me (still holding out for that tan!). I got this bronzer with a voucher I received in last year’s No7 advent calendar so I’m not sure if I would repurchase it again as it’s quite pricy. The packaging is really nice and sturdy through and it does feel a lot nicer than other bronzers I have used in the past.

For my blusher I used the L’Oreal Life’s a Peach blush.  I have been on the search for a coral blush for a while and I’m really pleased with this one. It has a lovely peachy scent and also comes with a little brush which I don’t use with it, because I’m in love with my Real Techniques blush brush. I think this colour is perfect for the spring/ autumn months and I’m sure I’ll get a lot of wear out of it this summer.

For my eyes I used my new Tarte palette which I received this week in the Look Incredible Deluxe box. These shimmery shades are made for summer and apply ever so smoothly! It’s unusual for a shimmer to have such fantastic colour pay off but these shades are fantastic! They say you don’t need eye primer with them, so I put that to the test today. I’d say there’s minimal creasing so it may actually be worth using an eye primer but the colour still stayed put throughout the day. I used the matte shade (tiki) all over my lid and then applied the pinky shade (heat wave) on top.

I finished off the eyes by applying a couple of coats of the Armani eyes to kill mascara. This mascara is fantastic for giving my eyelash both volume and length and I have now mastered applying it without getting it all over my lid and messing up my eyeshadow. Bonus!

On my lips I used Rimmel Stay Matte liquid lip colour in the shade Coral Sass. This shade is very vibrant and summery. Unfortunately today it applied quite patchy and streaky and I couldn’t fix it whatever I did so I decided to apply a coat of No7 High shine lip gloss in Naturally Nude on top. I think this combination worked really well and softened the overall look to make it look less crisp than with the liquid lipstick alone.

I finished the look off with a couple of sprays of the Nyx Matte Finish Setting spray. I don’t normally use setting spray, however I thought it’d be a good idea for the hotter weather and I do think that this, together with the translucent powder help my make up to stay on longer and my face to look less shiny.

Until next time,

Look Incredible Deluxe- April 2018

Look Incredible Deluxe April 2018

Apart from a very recent Tarte online order I have never owned or tried any high end make up so I was super excited for my first ever Look Incredible deluxe box! I knew what the products in the box were before I subscribed and one of the items in particular is what drove me to spend £35 on a beauty subscription box!

Until now my subscription box experience has been of the cheaper boxes- Birchbox, Glossybox and Roccabox. I have ended up disappointed by all of those eventually and ended up unsubscribing. So I thought I’d try a higher end box and see what that was like. So without further ado lets see what is in this month’s Look Incredible Deluxe box. (Look incredible have 3 different box types- the standard box costs £25 and it’s delivered every 2 months, the deluxe edition is £35 a month and I believe there’s also a £65 box which I have never looked into).

I was expecting a lot from this box due to its price tag. It arrived nicely packaged in a gold box, however the packaging looks luxurious but does feel quite cheap. There were bits of silicone hanging off the bow etc, but I didn’t really care because I won’t be keeping the box itself and it’s not the reason I subscribed after all! (They were rather stingy on the packing wormies too but nevermind)

Look Incredible Deluxe April 2018

First up we have the Urban Decay All Nighter Eyeliner Waterproof Perversion- RRP £20. Very long name for what is essentially a black eyeliner! I have never used any Urban Decay products and the quality of the packaging was impressive, it felt more metal than plastic like most eyeliners I am used to. I have to say this was the dud of the box for me. This eye liner claims to be “blacker-than-black” and although it is very black, its just an eyeliner after all. It’s a roll up one and when I first got it I rolled it up to see how much product was inside (who knows what drove me to that!). To my horror- I couldn’t wind up back down! I don’t know if I just got a rubbish product, or that’s how it works but I don’t understand why they’d make something that can be wound up but not back down?! So anyway, a bit of it broke off and now I have lost my love for this product really. It’s nice to receive but for £20 I would’ve rather had something else. I am not fussy about eyeliners, the ones I use never tend to smudge or run or anything throughout the day so I didn’t feel the need to own a super-duper waterproof one.

**UPDATE: I think we were sent out a faulty batch so I contacted Look Incredible who claim once wound up the pencil is not designed to wind back down and a lot of twists are required to get the product out. If that is the intentional design then this £20 eyeliner has a poorer design than a £2 one!!

Look Incredible Deluxe April 2018

Then I pulled out the Too Faced Melted Metal Liquified Metallic Lipstick- RRP £19. I have always heard fantastic things about this brand and was very excited to receive a product from them. Unfortunately the product itself was a let down. I would describe this more as a lip gloss than a lipstick. The colour is very faint and it really doesn’t last long at all. When I first put it on I was at home, wasn’t eating or drinking anything and it lasted around 20 minutes. When I first squeezed the tube only oil came out and it took a while for the (faint) pigment to show itself. I’m disappointed that it has quite an unpleasant taste and no scent which would have been nice for a product of this price!

In the box we also received the Benefit That Gal Primer – RRP £24.50. This brightening primer is very pink and claims to turn complexion from dull to darling. I haven’t yet used it on my skin but I don’t use foundation so I hope I can use it on its own and that it won’t my face look too pink! Hopefully it’ll make my bronzer and blusher last on longer.

And finally the absolute star of the box and the sole reason I bought it, the Tarte Rainforest Of The Sea Vol iii Highlighting Eyeshadow Palette – RRP £30. As I mentioned I recently placed an order via the Tarte website and I had considered buying this exact palette but instead went for the Shape Your Moneymaker (which came smashed but that’s another story…). So when I saw that this palette was in the look incredible box I had to buy it! The palette is absolutely beautiful with 7 shimmery shades and 1 matt base colour. I love love love it!! The nude shimmery colours are exactly up my street and I can see myself getting a hell of a lot of wear out of this! These can also be used as highlighters. I am so impressed that this palette was in the box, I think it is a fantastic addition and really makes the box worth it.

Look Incredible Deluxe April 2018

Look Incredible Deluxe April 2018

Overall I was happy with this box, but only due to the palette. The other products were okay, but nothing I’d choose to buy myself. However with an overall value of £93.50 this box is a great way to try high end make up for a fraction of the cost.

I have sadly cancelled my subscription because I couldn’t justify paying £35 every month for products I may end up not liking and I still don’t know whether high end make up is just a hype. I will keep an eye out for the content of future deluxe boxes as I don’t mind splashing out if I know they will contain something I want. I know that defeats the point of the surprise of a monthly boxes unfortunately.

Amazingly, this box is still in stock so you have time to grab one if you’ve been tempted!!

Until next time,

Sunday pampering

It’s a glum Sunday here in England and the perfect day to pamper yourself and relax with a cup of tea and a daytime movie.

These are the products I used this Sunday and below I will give a little review of each one.

1. Leonor Greyl L’Huile de Leonor Greyl Beautifying Oil for Lengths and Ends

I got this 5ml sample as part of Feel Unique’s Pick ‘n’ Mix sample service. I have never heard of this brand before but thought a 5ml sample would be enough to get an impression of the product. Applied to the hair ends when dry, kept on for 10 minuted then washed off.

Claims: to detangle, soften and repair dry ends and protect coloured hair from sun and seawater damage.

Verdict: this product would have probably been better saved for the summer when I go on holiday and swim in the sea or pool but I have had it for a while and wanted to finally give it a try. It had a strange consistency and I didn’t particularly like the smell. Luckily it was easy to wash off but I didn’t notice any difference to my hair really.

2. Sand and Sky purifying pink clay mask

This is an extremely hyped up mask which will set you back nearly £40 for a full size pot! I received this little sample in a recent Birchbox and finally got round to using it today.

Claims: From their own website “Cleansing and detoxifying, Sand and Sky’s Brilliant Skin Purifying Pink Clay Mask refines pores and brightens the complexion. Drawing impurities and pollutants from the pores, leave for 10 minutes to regenerate skin cells, stimulate collagen and leave a healthy, radiant glow.

Verdict: the mask dried really quickly and I couldn’t really move my face while it was on. It was easy to take off but I didn’t see any immediate difference in my skin. I probably have one use left in the sample tube so I’ll give it another go.

3. Pack your bags under eye rescue patches by Tarte

I recently placed my first ever online Tarte order to see what the hype about this high end brand was all about. I was left a little disappointed when my eyeshadow palette came broken and I am still waiting for a replacement. In order to get the free delivery I had to spend over £40 so I added the Wide Awake set to my basket on check out. This set contains a little Lights, camera, lashes mascara, tarte eye cream and these eye patches.

Claims: “Send those bags packing! These powerful patches infused with our Rainforest of the Sea complex soothe and hydrate your delicate undereye area to fight the appearance of puffiness and dark circles to help you fake awake”

Verdict: the eye patches were cooling but also a bit stingy which I found uncomfortable. It would have been nice for them to be more soothing and more cooling.

4. Ultra-purifying nose pore strips with charcoal and volcanic ash by Superdrug

I always have high hopes for nose strips as I suffer from quite bad blackheads which I just wish didn’t exist but alas!

Claims: with natural charcoal and volcanic ash to help absorb excess sebum, this ultra-purifying nose strip gently draws out dirt and grime and helps to remove dead skin cells, leaving behind visibly cleaner pores.

Verdict: I don’t think I wet my nose enough before applying so it didn’t really work 😦

5. Coconut water body lotion spray and bodymist from Lidl

I picked these up for 99p each at Lidl. I was super super excited to see this range, I also picked up a shampoo and conditioner but I am waiting to use up the ones I currently have open before starting on them.

Claims: A light but hydrating body lotion spray with a unique application designed to help reach all areas of the body. Infused with coconut water, this easily absorbed moisturiser will help nourish and care for your skin, helping to leave it soft, smooth with refreshing smell of coconut.

Verdict: I absolutely love both of these products! I have never had a body lotion spray before but I really like the idea. I also don’t normally use body mists as I don’t really know where they fit in and how they’ll interact with my perfume but I think it’ll be a great addition in the summer or on days when I’m not wearing perfume.

How have you been pampering yourselves this weekend?

Until next time,

Anna x

Feel Unique Pick ‘n’ Mix

Hey everyone,

As you may, or may not have noticed I have been missing from the blogging world for a while, life’s taken over a bit but I am back! I wanted to share with you some of the samples I’ve got from the Feel Unique pick ‘n’ mix service over the last couple of months. Just to recap- this service entitles you to 5 samples a month for free, you have to pay for P&P of £3.95. After you’ve placed your order you’ll receive a voucher code for the equivalent value to redeem on an order from the Feel Unique website. Quite a good deal really!

Burt’s bees products

If you’ve read my previous post you’ll know Burt’s bees have very generous samples, around 20g tubes for body creams, cleansers etc. I have quite a stash of those to get through so I have been trying some of their other products.

Hand Salve hand cream and Lemon butter cuticle cream: these tins are super cute and handy for popping in your bag. I think these are also quite generous sample sizes and I am very impressed with this brand! Both creams are quite greasy and seem to be quite intense hand creams which is good for me at the moment as my hands are really suffering. The Hand salve doesn’t have the nicest sense but the lemon butter cuticle cream smells absolutely delicious and zesty! I also got a little night cream which I am yet to try.

Elizabeth Arden mascara

I was really excised to try this mascara, as the full size is very pricy. I rushed to check out not to miss out, but this is still available so if you’re tempted then you can still get a sample to try before you buy. I was sadly disappointed by this mascara, I have tried and used way better and cheaper mascaras. I have used it with a mascara primer which improves it but by itself it offers length but no really additional volume which is disappointing, as something I do look for in my mascaras. It’s always handy to have little travel size mascaras though and no doubt I will get some use out of this.

Hydra-Activ day cream

I was excited to try this as it has hyaluronic acid in it and a 20ml sample can give you a really good idea of how a moisturiser gets on with your skin. This didn’t cause me any problems, it was quite light and absorbed well into my skin but I can’t report any miraculous transformations after using it, which to be fair is the case with most moisturisers. Still looking for that miracle cream that’ll fix all my skincare problems.

Perfume samples

I find Feel Unique to be a great way of trying out new fragrances. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you how expensive perfumes are and it really helps to try it out a few times before deciding to splash out on a full size. My absolute favourite has been Si by Georgio Armani which I now own and is my every day scent. When I fancy a bit of a change I use some of the other samples. I like all of the ones pictured above apart from Viva La Juice which I find to be way too floral and sickly. I don’t think I’ll be buying the full sized of any of them but it is lovely to have a variety and I have found that a 1ml sample lasts surprisingly long when used sparingly.

Overall I’d really recommended the Pick n Mix service. I really enjoy receiving the samples and finding the best bargains to order every month. It’s super handy that you get the P&P money back and you can use that to purchase full size of any of the samples you’ve tried, or anything else you might fancy.

Until next time,

Anna x

5 ways to save money

5 ways to save money

Saving money…we all want to do it, and do it well but it is something the majority of us probably struggle with. In the recent months I have tried to tie up the purse strings and save more money, here’s 5 easy ways I have found to work for me.

Less take aways/ meals out

I’d love to say I have managed to have NO take aways or meals out but I’m human, and sometimes I’m lazy and don’t want to cook or want to eat delicious food I can’t cook myself so will still treat myself. The key is to make take aways and meals out a treat rather than a habit. My problem is that I tend to want a take away after a bad day at work so the key is to stop associating expensive food with happiness and find more joy in the money I manage to save.

Weekly meal plan

I plan what meals I am going to cook for the coming week and make a shopping list of what ingredients I will need to prepare them. I look for inspiration by checking what things we already have in which I can build a meal around. I aim to try and use up tins that have been lying around for ages and things which have been hiding in the freezer and at the back of the fridge. This way you’ll need less ingredients for the meal and end up spending less at the supermarket. I have found going shopping with a list to have a much smaller total bill at the end, otherwise I spend a lot more on junk food and then have nothing to eat for the week ahead.

Not buying new clothes

If you have read my previous posts you’ll know I have set myself the target not to buy any clothes for 3 months. I have done well so far and haven’t purchased a single item of clothing. I have seen the difference in my bank account due to this. I know some people who set themselves the challenge of not buying any new clothes, but allow themselves to shop in charity shops and markets. This may be a good long-term solution for some however when I do start buying clothes again I think I will invest in a few good quality pieces which I need, rather than lost of cheap clothes which clog up my wardrobe yet I still feel like I have nothing to wear. Strangely I have enjoyed not buying clothes so far, I don’t waste time in clothes shops and I have saved money.

Cancelling beauty box subscriptions

Although I have never spent a lot of money on subscription boxes I have tried a few different ones. I used to think this was a good way of sampling different make up and skincare products and as a lot of boxes claim that the content is worth much more than the price of the box it felt like somewhat of a bargain. Unfortunately I would end up being disappointed by the products I received, often due to their small sample size or the products simply not being something I needed or would use. So I decided it was better to set a monthly beauty budget for any products I needed. I am concentrating on using up the products I have accumulated and although I don’t have a lot of make up by any means, I still find that there’s lip sticks and mascaras I haven’t yet used. It’s fun rediscovering what you have and not accumulating more.

Not drinking coffee out

I am a massive fan of Costa and went through a phase of having a hazelnut latte multiple times a week. If you add up the amount of money you end up spending in coffee shops it is actually quite a lot! Of course I still like to drink coffee out with my boyfriend but we save this for a weekend treat and make coffee at home during the week.

Monthly target saving

Basically every month I put a certain amount into savings as soon as I get paid. After all my outgoings have left my account I evaluate what I have left and set myself a target of money to have left at the end of each week and whatever I have left at the end of that month also goes into savings. This way I initially put an amount into savings which I can comfortably live without, then try to not spend a lot to save even more. This works quite well and stops you from wasting money unnecessarily. A tip I picked up online is to round up the amount you have in your account and put the rest in savings, for example if you have £345.67 in your account, put 67p in your savings, you won’t miss it but the amount will soon add up if you do this every time you log into your online bank account. This is really easy if you have a savings and current account with the same bank and can use the mobile banking app to do this.

Until next time,

Anna x
